Shah Sulaiman bin Shah ‘Abbas II al-Safawi al-Husaini al-Musavi Bahadur
Khan, Sahib-i-Qiran, Shahanshah of Persia, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 29th July 1694. Crowned at the Ayinakhana in Sa’adatabad Palace, Isfahan, 6th August 1694. A man of great piety and devotion. Forced to abdicate after the Afghan invasion, 23rd October 1722. m. several wives, including (first) 1694, a daughter of Vahshatu Sultan, Safi Quli Khan. m. (second) a daughter of H.M. Vakhtang V [Shah Nawaz Khan II], King of Kartli. m. (third) 1710, …Begum (m. second, ca. 1727, the Khan of Erevan), daughter of H.M. Kaikushru, King of Kartli and C-in-C of the Persian army. m. (fourth) (div.) Amina Begum, alias Khair un-nisa Khanum (m. second, ca. 1713, H.H. Amir Fath 'Ali Bahadur Khan-e Qajar Quyunlu, Nai'b us-Sultana), daughter of Husain Quli Agha. He was k. at Isfahan on the orders of Ashraf Shah, ca. November 1726, having had issue, fourteen sons and twelve daughters:
- 1) Prince (Shahzada) Sultan Mahmud Mirza. b. ca. 1697, educ. privately. Proclaimed as Heir Apparent with the title of Vali Ahad, 10th March 1722 (rescinded 12th March 1722). He was k. on the orders of Mahmud Shah, at Isfahan, 8th February 1725 (bur. Qum).
- 2) Prince (Shahzada) Safi Mirza. b. ca. 1699, educ. privately. Proclaimed as Heir Apparent with the title of Vali Ahad, 14th March 1722 (rescinded 26th March 1722). He was k. on the orders of Mahmud Shah, at Isfahan, 8th February 1725 (bur. Qum).
- 3) Prince (Shahzada) Tahmasp Mirza, who succeeded as H.M. Tahmasp Shah II, Shahanshah of Persia – see below.
- 4) Prince (Shahzada) Sultan Mehr Mirza. He was k. on the orders of Mahmud Shah, at Isfahan, 8th February 1725 (bur. Qum).
- 5) Prince (Shahzada) Sultan Haidar Mirza. He was k. on the orders of Mahmud Shah, at Isfahan, 8th February 1725 (bur. Qum).
- 6) Prince (Shahzada) Sultan Salim Mirza. He was k. on the orders of Mahmud Shah, at Isfahan, 8th February 1725 (bur. Qum).
- 7) Prince (Shahzada) Sultan Sulaiman Mirza. He was k. on the orders of Mahmud Shah, at Isfahan, 8th February 1725 (bur. Qum).
- 8) Prince (Shahzada) Sultan Ismail Mirza. He was k. on the orders of Shah Tahmasp II, 1732.
- 9) Prince (Shahzada) Sultan Muhammad Mirza. He was k. on the orders of Mahmud Shah, at Isfahan, 8th February 1725 (bur. Qum).
- 10) Prince (Shahzada) Sultan Khalil Mirza. He was k. on the orders of Mahmud Shah, at Isfahan, 8th February 1725 (bur. Qum).
- 11) Prince (Shahzada) Sultan Muhammad Baqir Mirza. He was k. on the orders of Mahmud Shah, at Isfahan, 8th February 1725 (bur. Qum).
- 12) Prince (Shahzada) Sultan Ja’afar Mirza He was k. on the orders of Mahmud Shah, at Isfahan, 8th February 1725 (bur. Qum).
- 13) Prince (Shahzada) Sultan … Mirza. He was k. on the orders of Ashraf Shah.
- 14) Prince (Shahzada) Sultan … Mirza. He was k. on the orders of Ashraf Shah.
- 1) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) … Begum. m. her cousin, Mirza Muqim Khalifa Sultani (d. after 1750), second son of Mirza Muhammad Nasir Khalifa Sultani.
- 2) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) … Begum. m. Mirza Muhammad Ibrahim. She had issue, two sons.
- 3) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) … Begum. m. at Isfahan, shortly after 23rd October 1722, H.M. Mahmud Shah Ghalzai, Shahanshah of Persia (b. 1699; d. in prison at Isfahan, 25th April 1725), eldest son of Mir Wais Ghalzai, Ruler of Kandahar. She had issue, an only son – see Persia (Ghalzai dynasty).
- 4) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) … Begum. m. at Isfahan, shortly after 23rd October 1722, General Amanu’llah Sultan (k. on the orders of Ashraf Shah Ghalzai, April 1725), a close adherant of Mahmud Shah Ghalzai.
- 5) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) … Begum. m. at Isfahan, shortly after 23rd October 1722, Mir Miangi (k. 1729), religeous adviser to Mahmud Shah Ghalzai.
- 6) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) … Begum. m. at Isfahan, April 1725, H.M. Ashraf Shah Ghalzai, Shahanshah of Persia (b. 1700; k. while fleeing to Kandahar, February 1730), eldest son of Mir ‘Abdu’l Aziz Ghalzai, Ruler of Kandahar - see Persia (Ghalzai dynasty).
- 7) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Razia Begum. m. (first) Daud Mirza [Doudam] (k. in battle against the Turks in Erivan, 1729), a Georgian Prince. m. (second) at Isfahan, December 1729, H.M. Zillu’llah Hast Sultan bar Salatin-i-Jahan Shah-i-Shahhan Nadir Shah, Sahib-i-Qiran, Shahanshah of Persia (b. at Dastgird, Darragaz, 22nd November 1688; k. at Fathabad, 19th June 1747 (bur. at Najaf), elder son of ‘Imam Quli Beg-e Afshar. She d.s.p. at Karbala, 1776 – see Persia (Afshar dynasty).
- 8) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) … Begum. m. 1730, General H.H. Muhammad Ibrahim Khan-e Afshar, Zahir ud-Daula (k. by the Lazgis, near Jar, between 14th November and 12th December 1738), sometime Governor-General and C-in-C of Azerbaijan, younger son of ‘Imam Quli Beg-e Afshar. She d. Autumn/Winter, 1736 (bur. Mashhad) – see Persia (Afshar dynasty).
- 9) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Fatima Sultan Begum. m. at Mashhad, January 1731, H.R.H. Shahzada Reza Quli Mirza (b. at Abivard, 15th April 1719; k. on the orders of Adil Shah at Kalat, Baluchistan, July 1747), eldest son of H.M. Zillu’llah Hast Sultan bar Salatin-i-Jahan Shah-i-Shahhan Nadir Shah, Sahib-i-Qiran, Shahanshah of Persia, Shahanshah of Persia, by his wife, the elder daughter of Baba ‘Ali Beg-e Kusa Ahmadlu, sometime Governor of Abivard. She d. (committed suicide on learning of the death of her brother Shah Tahmasp II and his sons), at Mashhad, 5th February 1740 (bur. there), having had issue, one son - see Persia (Afshar dynasty).
- 10) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Khan Aga Begum. m. 1731, her cousin, H.M. Shah Sulaiman II, Shahanshah of Persia (b. at Isfahan, 18th June 1714; d. at Mashhad, 19th May 1763), son of Mirza Muhammad Daud al-Husaini al-Marashi, by his wife, Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Shahbanu Begum, daughter of H.M. ‘Abu’l Muzaffar Shah Sulaiman Safi II, Shahanshah of Persia. She had issue – see below.
- 11) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Nawaba Maryam Begum. m. her cousin, Mirza Sayyid Murtaza Khalifa Sultani, sometime Sadar us-Sadur, son of Sayyid ‘Ali Khalifa Sultani. She had issue, two sons:
- a) Nawab Sayyid Ahmad Mirza. m. Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) ‘Ismat un-nisa (d. before 14th March 1774), daughter of his maternal uncle, H.M. Tahmasp Shah II, Sahib-i-Qiran, Shahanshah of Persia. He d. at Isfahan, before 3rd March 1775), having had issue, a daughter.
- b) Sayyid ‘Abu’ Turab Mirza, who succeeded as H.M. Seized the provinces of Fars and Kerman, on behalf of Shah Tahmasp II in 1139. Crowned at Kerman, under the name of Ahmad Shah, 8th November 1726. Defeated and captured by Ashraf Shah Ghalzai, 1728. al-Musavi al-Safawi Bahadur Khan, Sahib-i-Qiran, Shahanshah of Persia, educ. privately. Proclaimed as Heir Apparent with the title of Vali Ahad, 26th March 1722. Escaped to Isfahan during the Afghan siege, 7th June 1722. Proclaimed at Qazvin, 24th
November 1722. Defeated by the Afghans and driven to Tabriz in 1725,
forced out by the Turks to Teheran, defeated again by the Afghans and
expelled from that city to Mazandaran, December 1725. Captured Mashhad
with the aid of Nadir Quli Beg-e Afshar, 11th December 1726. Recaptured Isfahan and was Crowned there, December 1729. Deposed by Nadir Shah, 2nd September 1732. m.

- ii) Sultan Muhammad Daud Mirza. b. at at Murshidabad, 17th January 1789 (s/o Zinat un-nisa Begum). Returned to Persia and d. at Isfahan, 1804, having had issue, an only daughter by a slave girl:

- ii) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Sultan Zubaida Begum Sahiba. b. at Murshidabad (d/o Suzgar Khawas). m. (first) at Murshidabad, Kasim ‘Ali Khan. m. (second) at Murshidabad, Mirza Muhammad ‘Ali Khan (d.s.p. at Murshidabad, 19th May 1832). She d. at Murshidabad, before 6th December 1830, having had issue, two sons by her first husband.

- b) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Sultan Shahrukh Begum Sahiba [Bakhshi Begum] (d/o Muhammadi Begum). m. as his second wife, Ziga ul-Mulk, Imtiaz ud-Daula, Sayyid Himmat ‘Ali Khan Bahadur, Rustam Jang (d. at Murshidabad, 12th October 1808). She d. at Murshidabad, before 17th December 1823, having had issue, one son and one daughter.
- c) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Sultan Khadija Begum Sahiba. m. before 1802, Mirza ‘Abdu’l Husain. She d. at Murshidabad, 30th November 1845, having had issue, one son and one daughter.
- d) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Nur Sharaf Begum Sahiba [Umda Begum]. She d. at Murshidabad, 17th April 1855, having had issue, one daughter.
- e) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Mehr Jahan Begum Sahiba. m. Mirza Muhammad Taqi. She d. at Murshidabad, 20th September 1833, having had issue, one son.

Crowned at Isfahan for the second time, under the name of Sulaiman, 20th March 1668. Lived the life of a recluse, shutting himself up in his harem for seven years. m. several wives, including (a) Elena, daughter of the Atabegi of Samtzkhé, in Georgia. H.M. ‘Abu’l Muzaffar Ismail Shah I, Shahanshah of Persia. b. 17th July 1487, third and youngest son of ‘Abu’l Wilayat Sultan Haidar Safawi, Grand Master of the Safawi Order, by his wife, Alam Shah Begum [Halima Begi Agha], daughter of Sultan ‘Abu’l Nasir Hasan Khan [Uzun Hasan], Khan of the Aq Quyunlu, by his wife, Princess Catherine [Despina Khatun], second daughter of H.M. Emperor Ioannis IV [Kaloyan] Komnenos, Emperor of Trebizond. Imprisoned with his brother and mother at Isfahan 1489-1493, nominated Grand Master of the Safawi Order 1494, and took refuge in Lahijan 1494-1499, conquered Shirvan 1500 and defeated the Aq Quyunlu, 1501. - 5) Prince (Shahzada)‘Abu’l Fath Sultan Muiz ud-din Bahram Mirza. b. at Surluq, 7th September 1518 (s/o Shah-Begi), educ. privately. Governor of Khorasan 1529-1532, Gilan 1536-1537 and Hamadan 1546-1549. m. Zainab Sultan Khanum (m. second, after 1549, H.M. ‘Abu’l Muzaffar Tahmasp Shah I, Shahanshah of Persia; and d. at Qazvin, October 1570), sister of Imad ud-din Shirvani. He d. 16th September 1550 (bur. Mashhad), having had issue, four sons and one daughter:
- a) Sultan Hasan Mirza (twin with his brother Husain?). Adopted by his uncle Tahmasp Shah I. He d. young (?).
- b) Sultan Husain Mirza. Governor of Sistan 1555-1557, Kandahar 1557-1576, Zamindawar and Garmsir 1558-1566. m. several wives, including (a) (k. by the Biyats, while defending Kalat fort for her son, before 1592). He d. at Kandahar, September/October 1576, having had issue, five sons and one daughter:
- i) Sultan Muhammad Husain Mirza. b. at Kandahar, 1559, educ. privately. He was k. at Qazvin, 23rd February 1577.
- ii) Farzand Sultan Muzaffar Husain Mirza. b. at Kandahar, 1562, educ.
privately. Governor of Kandahar 1578-1595. Surrendered Kandahar to
Emperor Akbar I of India and entered his service, 1594. Granted the
title of Farzand, and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 5,000 zat and 4,000 sowar 1594, retd 1599. m. (first) a daughter of Malik Mahmud Khan, sometime Governor of Sistan. m. Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 2,000 zat 1698, prom. to 2,500 zat and 800 sowar in 1703, prom. to 3,000 zat and 1,000 sowar 1704, prom. to 3,500 zat in 1706, prom. to 5,000 zat in 1707. Faujdar of Ramgir 1684, of Irij Bhander, and of Punar, Paymaster Corps of Gentlemen (Bakshi-i-Ahdiyan), Subadar of Khandesh 1702-1704, 3rd Bakshi 1704-1706, 2nd Bakshi 1706-1707. Granted the titles of Khan 1684, Mirza 1703, Hisam ud-Daula 1707, and Shah Nawaz Khan Bahadur by Emperor Bahadur Shah. He d. from wounds received fighting for Prince Azim us-Shan, having left the battlefield near Lahore with seventeen arrows sticking in his body, 18th March 1712.

- (2) Nawab Kandahari Begum Sahiba previously Kandahari Mahal. b. at Kandahar, before 1594. m. at Agra, 12th December 1609, as his first wife, H.M. Al-Sultan al-’Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, ‘Abu’l-Muzaffar Shihab ud-din Muhammad, Sahib-i-Qiran-i-Sani, Shah Jahan I Padshah Ghazi Zillu’llah [Firdaus-Ashiyani], Emperor of India (b. at Lahore, 15th January 1592; d. at the Musamman Burj, Agra, 2nd February 1666), fourth son of H.M. Al-Sultan al-’Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, Khushru-i-Giti Panah, ‘Abu’l-Fath Nur ud-din Muhammad Jahangir Padshah [Jannat-Maksani], Emperor of India, by his wife, Jagat Gosain, Bilqis Makani Begum Sahiba, née Rajkumari Shri Mani Baiji Lall Sahiba, daughter of Raja Shri Udai Singhji, Raja of Marwar. - iii) Nawab ‘Iffat Khan [Sultan Rustam Mirza]. b. at Kandahar, 1565 (s/o the lady k. at Kalat), educ.
privately. Governor of Zamindawar and Garmsir 1578-1589. Disputed
control over Sistan and Zamindawar with his elder brother, Muzaffar
Husain. Surrendered his rights to the government to Emperor Akbar I of
India, 1594. Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 5,000 zat and 150 sowar 1594, prom to 5,000 zat and 500 sowar 1613, prom to 5,000 zat and 1,000 sowar 25/3/1617 o.s., prom to 5,000 zat and 1,500 sowar 1618, prom to 6,000 zat and 6,000 sowar 1613, retd. 1627. Subadar of Patna 1611-1613, Thatta 1613-1615, Kandahar 1617-1618, Allahabad 1622-1626, and Bihar 1626-1627. Received Multan in jagir together with several parganas in Baluchistan 1594, exchanged for Chittor 1596, and granted Pathankot 1597, exchanged for Raisin in 1599. - (1) Nawab Iltifat Khan [Mirza Murad Safawi]. Appointed to an Imperial mansab of 2,000 zat and 700 sowar by Emperor Jahangir, prom to 2,500 zat 1639, retd 1642. Granted the title of Iltifat Khan 1616. m. a daughter of Khan-i-Khanan, Nawab Mirza ‘Abdu’r Rahim Khan, sometime Subadar of Gujarat and Multan, by his wife, Mah Banu Begum. He d. at Patna, after 1657, having had issue, one son:
- (a) Mirza Mukarram Khan [Mirza Murad Kam Safawi]. - (i) Gowhar un-nisa Begum Sahiba. m. Amir ul-Umara, Samsam ud-Daula, Nawab Husain Sa’adat Khan Bahadur, Zulfiqar Jang [Sayyid Muhammad Taqi] (d. of wounds received at Delhi, 28th February 1719), previously entitled Sayyid Salabat Khan, sometime Paymaster-General and Subadar of Kashmir, son of Sayyid Husain Sa’adat Khan, of the Marashi clan.
- (b) Mirza Mu‘azzam Khan [Mirza Muhammad Mu‘azzam Safawi] (s/o Navras Begum). Entered the Mughal service and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 500 zat 1653, prom to 1,500 zat and 1,500 sowar 1659, prom to 2,500 zat and 2,500 sowar 1688, Faujdar of Gorakpur 1668. Qushbegi (Lord High Falconer) 1684-1698. Granted the title of Siyadat Khan 1662, prom. to Mirza Mu‘azzam Khan 1685. He d. 1698, having had issue, two daughters:
- (i) Nawab Azam Banu Begum Sahiba. m. at Aurangabad, India, 14th March 1683, Sultan Muhammad Kam Bakhsh (b. at Delhi, 25th February 1667; d. of wounds at Hyderabad, 13th January 1709), fifth son of H.M. Al-Sultan al-’Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, ‘Abu’l-Muzaffar Muhi ud-din Muhammad Aurangzeb Bahadur ‘Alamgir Padshah Ghazi [Khuld Makan], Emperor of India, by his wife, Udaipuri Mahal. - (b) Nawab Sakina Begum Sahiba. m. at Lahore, 20th July 1652, Sultan Muhammad Murad Bakhsh Bahadur (b. at Rohtas, 9th October 1624; k. at Gwalior Fort, 4th December 1661), sometime Subadar of Multan, Balkh, Kashmir, and the Deccan, seventh son of H.M. Al-Sultan al-’Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, ‘Abu’l-Muzaffar Shihab ud-din Muhammad, Sahib-i-Qiran-i-Sani, Shah Jahan I Padshah Ghazi Zillu’llah, Emperor of India, by his wife, H.M. Malika-i-Jahan, Mumtaz Mahal, Arjumand Banu Qudsia Begum Sahiba, daughter of H.H. Waqil-i-Mutlaq, Yamin ud-Daula, Nawab Abu’l-Hasan Asaf Khan Bahadur, Khan-i-Khanan, Chief Minister and C-in-C to the Emperor Jahangir - see India Pensioners (Delhi).
- (c) Another daughter. m. after 1672, Nawab Musavi Khan [Mirza Muiz] (b. at Qum, 1646; d. May 1690), Supt. of the Imperial jagirs 1689-1689 and Diwan of Bihar 1688, and of the Deccan 1689-1690, granted the title of Musavi Khan 1690, a poet under the nom de plume ‘Fitrat’, son of Mirza Fakhra, a Musavi Sayyid of Qum, by his wife, a daughter of Mir Muhammad Zaman, of Mashhad. Al-Sultan al-’Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, Khushru-i-Giti Panah, ‘Abu’l-Fath Nur ud-din Muhammad Jahangir Padshah, Emperor of India, by his fifth wife, Sahib-i-Jamal Begum Sahiba, daughter of Khwaja Hasan. - (2) Nawab Bilqis Begum Sahiba. m. at Patna, 5th March 1633, Sultan Muhammad Shah Shuja’ Bahadur [Abu’l Fauz Nasir ud-din Muhammad Timur III Iskander II Sahib-i-Qiran-i-Sani Shah Shuja’ Padshah Ghazi] (b. at Ajmer, 3rd July 1616; k. in the Arakan, ca. 7th February 1661), Viceroy of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, third son of H.M. Al-Sultan al-’Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, ‘Abu’l-Muzaffar Shihab ud-din Muhammad, Sahib-i-Qiran-i-Sani, Shah Jahan I Padshah Ghazi Zillu’llah, Emperor of India, by his wife, H.M. - (1) Nawab Iltifat Khan [Mirza Murad Safawi]. Appointed to an Imperial mansab of 2,000 zat and 700 sowar by Emperor Jahangir, prom to 2,500 zat 1639, retd 1642. Granted the title of Iltifat Khan 1616. m. a daughter of Khan-i-Khanan, Nawab Mirza ‘Abdu’r Rahim Khan, sometime Subadar of Gujarat and Multan, by his wife, Mah Banu Begum. He d. at Patna, after 1657, having had issue, one son:
- iv) Sultan Sanjar Mirza (s/o the lady k. at Kalat). Entered the service of Emperor Akbar I of India and appointed to an Imperial mansab of 350 zat 1594. He d. in India, before 15th August 1597.

- c) Shahzada Sultan Badi uz-Zaman Mirza. Governor of Sistan 1558-1577. He was k. with his son on the orders of H.M. Shah Ismail II, at Sistan, ca. February 1577, having had issue, one son and one daughter:

- 4) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Khair un-nisa Khanish Khanum. m. 1537, Sayyid Nur ud-din Nimatu’llah Baqi Yazdi (d. at Hamadan, 21st July 1564, bur. there), son of Mir Nizam ud-din ‘Abdu’l Baqi Yazdi, sometime Vakil to the Shah. She d. 12th March 1564 (bur. Hamadan), having had issue, two sons and one daughter.
- 5) Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Shah Zainab Khanum. b. 1519. m. Muhammad Khan Sharaf Ughali Takalu (d. 1556).

- 8) A daughter. m. her cousin, ‘Abdu’llah Khan Ustajalu (b. before 1517; d. at Shirvan, 2nd October 1565), sometime Governor General of Shirvan, son of Kara Khan Ustajalu, sometime Governor General of Diyarbakir, by his wife, Princess (Shahzadi ‘Alamiyan) Fatima Sultan Begum, eldest daughter of ‘Abu’l Wilayat Sultan Haidar Safawi, Grand Master of the Safawi Order. She had issue, one son and one daughter.
